How to make a bubble chart

  1. Paste four columns: Label, X, Y, Size.
  2. Bubble area (not diameter) is proportional to Size, so a bubble twice the value is twice the area.
  3. Name the axes and say what size means in the subtitle.
  4. Download PNG or SVG.

Reading a bubble chart

A bubble chart is a scatter plot with a third variable encoded as size. It’s great for portfolio-style views: cost vs return, sized by revenue. Because people underestimate area differences, scale bubbles by area — as this tool does — and label the important ones.

Keep it to around 5–25 bubbles, and explain the size variable in the subtitle.

Questions

Is bubble size based on radius or area?

Area. Scaling the radius would make a value twice as big look four times as big.

Can bubbles have negative sizes?

No — sizes use the absolute value. Represent negative quantities on an axis instead.
