How to make a line graph
- Paste your data: first column = time or order (Jan, Feb… or 2021, 2022…), extra columns = lines.
- Name the axes and add a title.
- Turn on value labels, smooth curves or markers as needed.
- Untick “Start axis at zero” to zoom into small changes (and say so in the title).
- Download PNG or SVG, or copy a share link.
When to use a line graph
Use a line when the x-axis has a natural order — usually time — and you care about the trend: growth, seasonality, before and after. The line connecting points implies that values in between exist, so don’t use lines for unrelated categories like product names; use a bar graph for those.
Multiple line graphs
Each extra column becomes a separate line with its own colour and legend entry. More than four or five lines quickly turns into spaghetti; split them into several charts or highlight one line and grey the rest (choose the “Single hue” palette).
Does a line graph need to start at zero?
Unlike bars, not always. A line’s message is its slope, so zooming in can be honest — for example body temperature or a share price. But a zoomed axis exaggerates change, so label it clearly. The “Start axis at zero” option is on by default.

Questions
How do I plot more than one line?
Add more value columns with a header row, e.g. “Month, 2025, 2026”. Each column becomes a line.
What if I have missing values?
Leave the cell empty. The line connects the points on either side, and no marker is drawn for the gap.
Can I make a smooth curve?
Yes, tick “Smooth curve”. It uses a gentle curve through every point, so the line still passes exactly through your data.
Can I use dates on the x-axis?
Yes. Labels are drawn in the order you enter them, so any format works (2026-01, Jan 2026, Q1). Points are spaced evenly.
