Double bar graph maker

Compare two sets of numbers category by category — this year vs last, boys vs girls, before vs after. Paste three columns and the paired bars, legend and axis appear instantly.

First row = headers. First column = categories; every extra column becomes a series. Paste straight from a spreadsheet.

How to make a double bar graph

  1. Put the categories in the first column and each group in its own column, with a header row (e.g. “Subject, Class A, Class B”).
  2. Paste it into the data box — tabs from Excel or Sheets and commas from CSV both work.
  3. Keep “Side by side” selected. Add a third column for a triple bar graph.
  4. Turn on value labels, then download a PNG or SVG.

Why bars must start at zero

Store A sold 96, store B sold 101 — B is about 5% higher. Move where the axis starts.

B looks 1.1× as tall as A

What a double bar graph is for

A double bar graph (also called a grouped or clustered bar chart) puts two bars next to each other for every category, one per group, so you can compare the groups within each category and the categories across each group at the same time. Use one colour per group and keep the same order in every pair, and the legend does the rest.

Double bar graph or stacked bar graph?

Side-by-side bars make it easy to compare the two groups directly, because both bars start at zero. Stacked bars make it easy to compare totals, but the upper segments float, so they are harder to compare. If the question is “which group is bigger in each category?”, use a double bar graph. If it is “what is the total, and what is it made of?”, use the stacked bar chart maker.

Tips

  • Two or three groups per category is the readable limit; beyond that, split into several charts.
  • Order categories meaningfully: by time, or largest-first with “Order”.
  • Long category names? Switch Direction to Horizontal or use the horizontal bar graph maker.

Questions

How do you make a double bar graph?

Make a table with categories in the first column and one column for each group, with a header row. Paste it in, keep “Side by side” selected, and each category gets two bars plus a legend that names the groups.

What is the difference between a bar graph and a double bar graph?

A bar graph shows one value per category. A double bar graph shows two values per category, side by side, so two groups can be compared.

Can I make a triple bar graph?

Yes. Add a third value column. Any number of columns works, but more than three or four bars per category gets crowded.

How do I make a double bar graph in Google Sheets or Excel?

Select the three columns and insert a column chart; both programs group the bars automatically. Or copy the same three columns and paste them here to get a cleaner chart and a PNG in seconds.

Should the bars touch?

Bars within a pair can touch; leave a gap between categories so the pairs read as groups.
